The route from Turkey to Oman

Containers for Oman go by sea through the Suez Canal and the Red Sea to Salalah or Sohar, both outside the Strait of Hormuz. Trucks can also make the long drive through Iraq and Saudi Arabia.

Since March 2026 the Strait of Hormuz has been mostly shut. Salalah and Sohar lie outside it, so carriers still take bookings for Oman, but the ports are crowded with cargo diverted from the Gulf. Ships from Turkey also pass through the Red Sea, where Houthi threats against Saudi-linked ships returned in July 2026. We confirm the best route when you order.

By sea

From Mersin and Ambarlı in Istanbul to Salalah or Sohar. A full container just for you, or space in a shared one.

About 15 days from Mersin and 19 from Istanbul to Salalah, and about 38 from Mersin to Sohar (schedule estimates, with transhipment). Lines listed include Maersk, Hapag-Lloyd, MSC and ONE. Congestion at both ports can add time.

15–38 days
By road

A long route with several borders: through Iraq under TIR, across Saudi Arabia, then into Oman at the Ramlat Khaliya crossing in the Empty Quarter or through the UAE. In May 2026 DHL put the crossing from Saudi Arabia at 24 to 36 hours. A TIR run to the UAE took 10 days door to door (IRU, October 2025), and Oman is further.

Papers: what we prepare and what Oman asks for

We prepare in Turkey

  • Commercial invoiceEvery model, its quantity and price.
  • Packing listWhat is in each carton, its weight and size, from the inspection.
  • Certificate of originOman's customs asks for the original, in English or Arabic. It doesn't lower the duty, since no agreement applies, and some customs offices also want a stamp from an Omani mission in Turkey.

What Oman asks of you

  • Bayan registrationThe importer must be a company based in Oman and registered in Bayan, the customs single window, with its commercial registration and a valid Oman Chamber of Commerce membership.Official site
  • Stamped invoice and certificate of originCustoms needs the original invoice and certificate of origin. Oman is in the Apostille Convention, yet many offices want a stamp from an Omani mission in Turkey too, and practice varies by office. If papers come late, customs can take a refundable extra 1% to 1.5%, so agree the papers with your broker before shipping.Official site
  • Product and food approvalsToys and low-voltage electrical goods need the Gulf G-mark, and cosmetics a third-party conformity certificate. Meat, dairy, eggs and fresh or frozen food go through veterinary quarantine, and processed food such as biscuits, chocolate and tea needs a health certificate.

Trade agreement and duties

No trade agreement is in force; Oman is part of the GCC–Türkiye talks, still going on in October 2026. Oman applies the GCC tariff: 5% of the CIF value on most goods, with some exceptions. It also charges 5% VAT, and excise of 50% to 100% on carbonated and energy drinks, tobacco, pork and alcohol.

Before you order goods for Oman

  • Cargo must arrive on pallets (land ports since 15 July 2026, sea and air ports since 15 September 2026), or it can be sent back at your cost. Wooden pallets need ISPM-15 treatment; bulk cargo, heavy equipment and similar goods may be exempt.
  • Food labels must be in Arabic, or Arabic and English, with the expiry date on the pack, not on a sticker. Since April 2026 bottled water, farmed fish and canned fish must come from producers certified in their home country.
  • Ships for Oman pass through the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, and drones hit Salalah and Duqm in March 2026. Some insurers have cut cover for these waters, so check your cargo insurance. We confirm the route and the time when you order.
